I average around 7-8 mins on extreme, though a handful of puzzles might manage to get me close or above the 10 minute mark


My personal best is 3:25, I posted a 3:50 today and all of my "top scores" are under 5 minutes. I'm lucky if I post a sub-5 or sub-4 minute puzzle 1 in every 50, but it happens. Sometimes I can recognize a really tricky solution early on that makes solving the whole board easy. After doing a lot of sudoku puzzles in my day, I have a pretty good indication of where on the puzzle I'll be able to find the next solution so that greatly reduces the 'thinking time'.

This is playing on a touch-screen android phone, I know the game pauses so it's easy to cheat but I never have... These times involved a lot of luck, and my 10th best time is close to 1 minute more on extreme.

I really can't see how much less than a minute is possible on any difficulty... I can probably improve all my times with about 10% if I have a lot of luck, but getting less than 30 sec in easy is impossible to me. I simply cant input numbers that fast....

The question is: Why didn't they show the first seconds or the beginning of the Sudoku?

The answer is easy: If you select "[b]solve" - back - resume[/b] you can see the solved Sudoku
and you can start the same Sudoku again.

It looks like an unsolved game, but in the result row appers the easy "*" for using the helper.

It's the same with magic illusion tricks: You will see what you want to see.

My top time in Easy is 46 seconds right now, and I know I could do better, as i find myself hesitating for stupid reasons. After having played several thousand games using this app, I can completely believe that there are some players that can achieve sub-30 times in Easy, given the right puzzles. I come across at least one easy puzzle every day that requires no backtracking (i.e. using digit-first, only selecting each digit once).

When I was in junior high, the gym coach brought in a radar gun to see how fast we could throw a baseball. I threw as hard as I could, and could only get the thing to clock somewhere the 40 mph range. One kid managed mid-50s. At that same time Nolan Ryan was near retirement and still flinging balls in excess of 100 mph on a regular basis. If I used the logic of most of the posters on this board, my gym class experience would have led me to say that was impossible to pitch a baseball anywhere near fast as 100 mph without cheating, and call tv coverage of pro ball games "fakes." Because the light up just shows you which are in the columns and rows so you don't accidentally miss one. That way if you fail it's your logic that makes you fail, and not your eyesight that makes you fail. 100% legit my best is 1:30 and I've only played easy 6 times on this app(I prefer the challenge in extreme) If you use pencil marks you can't get tiny times, but you power grind easys you will get one that lines up perfectly with your method eventually and just blow through it, plus you'll get faster from experience and whatnot.

They don't do any of the logic for you, they just remove the tediousness of removing marks when you are on a roll towards the end. Paper and pencil actually gives a far emphasis to who can write and erase quicker compared to this one. TRUE test of just sudoku logic would be a hell/impossible difficulty game(maybe extreme, but they still have some easy squares comparatively)(no those difficulties aren't in this app) with all of the pencils already in of all POSSIBLE ones in that square solely base don what's filled in. Then the user whittles down the possibilities using logic. I almost always play on easy. And I must say, I play a lot. 10-40 games per day, usually on the way to work. And I've been doing so for 5 years on this same app. Slowly but steadily my times have been improving. Though that wouldn't be surprising after literally thousands of games :p
I remember 2 years ago my easy-times would average around 1:50 with a highscore of 1:43 and thinking "I will never ever get faster than that". I kept going and got stuck again around 1:15. My current 0:46 is from 7 months ago, but lately 8 out of 10 times I'm under a minute.
And no, I don't cheat. I've thought of the screenshot-way, but it seems so convoluted. And it would mess up my own real scores. Not sure of any rules that everyone follows for a score to be considered "legitimate", but for my 4:55, I played straight through without pausing. I always have the thing turned on that tells you you've made an error, and if I do enter a wrong number, I abort that game. For myself, I only regard my games where I play clean through with no errors as legitimate. I do allow games that I've paused (phone call, doorbell, etc), but I'd only be cheating myself if I cheated - not really interested in any competitions or scoreboards.

I find the extreme times of around or below 4 minutes difficult to believe, but TBH a year ago, I'd have considered a sub 5 minute time unlikely for myself, so I'll keep an open mind.

Several years ago I did have a flip phone with a sudoku game on it, and I could beat its hard setting in about the same amount of time as this, without candidate lists (it didn't have the capability), even though the input method was more analog, you had to scroll to each square.

If you're having trouble getting under 10 min, make sure you choose digit first so you can do candidate lists faster, and just go by number, starting with the numbers you already have the most of. The key is to use as few screentaps and to input them as fast as possible. In any case, I just got my fastest of 1:45 in extreme. I have a new technique which allows me to get below 3 minutes quite often. Note that shoving 10 seconds off of 5 minutes is a lot easier than shaving 10 seconds off of 2 minutes.

To get these super times, you have to be able to do a number of things:

<ul>
<li>use both thumbs to enter numbers. use a small-screen device, not a tablet. You can't reach around those things. You'll learn finger agility with practice. You'll need a lot of practice.
<li>make only fast decisions, if not fast, move on to the next number
<li>start with the easy ones (the ones where there's already a lot of numbers)
<li>pencil in your head to find impossibilities. This requires a lot of practice. It starts by knowing how Sudoku works.
<li>fill in the ones you can find quickly in pen mode, then switch to pencil mode
<li>hidden pairs take a lot of time to find. If you see them, use them immediately and remember them so as not to pencil in anything else. If you have to search for hidden pairs, you'll likely not make the top 100 already.
<li>A MAJOR help is this: If you have penciled everything in, then when you find a digit, you should always evaluate only the digits that were penciled into that cell. Check the grid to see if any of those have changed possibilities (last one left, or it's a row/col in cell blocking the others in that row/col). Those are the only digits that changed state when you put the number in the cell. Often you find one or more of those digits can now be filled in. Simply add the numbers penciled into the new cell to your set of digits to check.

If your best time is 5 minutes you're mediocre at best. Some people treat this game as a sport and they practice until they drop and they take pride in their achievements. I myself play because I'm addicted .

All my top 10 are under 2:34 now and all in the last 5 days.

I wanted to say that cheating at these speeds must be very hard indeed. I stare intently at the screen as I do these speed solves. Having to look away to see what the answers are and them back, focusing each time on the other board must just be really hard. I can't imagine making good time using that technique. Even an easy would probably take over a minute to fill out, looking back and forth, finding your bearings with each switch.

Having made the 1:45 honestly, and knowing thousands of players play at the same time, I find it quite plausible that people get sub-1-minute times. But I can't imagine that this is possible by cheating, unless some software fills it out for you.

I want to finish by saying that I sometimes can't find a solution to a puzzle even after 20 minutes. I usually find I missed something, so it wasn't the puzzle being hard after all. Sometimes I can't find the answer at all and use a hint. "At all" can mean after 7 minutes or so for me before I give up. Going for times below 3 minutes makes a 7 minute game feel like a waste of time. It's not like you win anything at that point.

I've also played games for 25 minutes and then found the solution. But that's a forever and I had better be watching TV while I do that or it's just too tedious. I suspect that I can get into the high 3`s using my current strategy but beyond that I will likely need to become a bit more flexible with my recognition. I still tend to be a bit too structured. A more holistic approach seems to be the most likely way of doing extreme in the 2's.

I would like to see an extreme++ kind of level that presses me to spend more time thinking through the puzzle. Extreme only occasionally generates a really tough puzzle. Most of them are consistently solvable for me in the 5's.

If your recognition of the puzzle is good you shouldn't be limited by much more than how fast you can enter the result. I can't really comment about sub 2 but I can see an awful lot of room for improvement in my current results with simple brute force practice to improve consistency and recognition. I like to do the extreme category with all help disabled, all highlighting disabled, and no pencil marks. When I first started this it was terrible. Now, my best time is around 6 with average being about 12.

On average i solve the puzzles in 3-5 mins when im focused.

4-6 mins while watching series (Yes, I watch tv series while playing sudoku almost everyday when i feel like it).

Max 10 mins on hard ones.

Try tapping all the numbers in the available boxes with a touch screen, see how long that takes you. No thinking time involved.

For those wondering about how times like this are possible (considering you are filling out 60+ spots), I find it much easier to do a digit at a time.

I start with whatever digit has the most already filled out (using the indicators on the corners of the digit buttons). I did a search for Guiness World record for fastest sudoku. This was a "very easy" puzzle in 2006 the time was 1:23.

So either they stopped taking Guiness records of sudoku or people uploading times less than 1:23 for and extreme puzzle are cheating.

my best time is 5:40 and I felt like I was constantly 'inking' in the digits. average time is 6-8 minutes (all my bests are under 8minutes), but every so often I get stuck and go to 15 minutes.

I've found that the fastest games have some characteristics. 1) there are more than one number which only have one digit already on the board 2) when one digit has no numbers already on the board.

No, I don't cheat. I don't need to; I'm only playing against myself. I don't post my scores or play against a friend. I play to waste time or to take my mind off of other things.

Frankly, Extreme is often far too easy and are an annoyance when they are so ultra fast. I have lately resorted to grabbing games from other sources in order to be challenged at all. My current source lists the games as Medium, and they typically require from 10 to 20 minutes to solve, with the occasional 6 or 7 minute game thrown in. I tried one of their Hard games, and they were beyond my skill level. One had two x-wings and a swordfish all in one step of the solution. That was beyond my current knowledge level, though I recall studying those some 10 years ago.

So, these fast times absolutely can be done without cheating. And, to the devs, if these are Extreme, could you perhaps consider adding an 'Impossible' level so that we could have some games that are a bit more challenging? I hate adding Custom games.

Or, add a way to scan another game and import it into your game? That would be lovely.
